Hey there! Can you believe we're already in May? Time really flies! Looking back at April, it had its ups and downs, but overall, it was a pretty magical month for me. Study Finds That Most Prenatal Supplements Do Not Provide Adequate Levels of Key Nutrients for Pregnant Women
If you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you're probably aware of the importance of proper nutrition during pregnancy. While a balanced diet is the best way to ensure you're getting all the nutrients you need, many women take prenatal supplements to make sure they're getting enough of key nutrients.
A recent study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition examined 28 popular prenatal supplements and compared their levels of six key nutrients (iron, iodine, folate, vitamin D, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids) to the recommended daily intake levels for pregnant women. The results were concerning: only three of the supplements provided adequate levels of all six nutrients.
So what does this mean for pregnant women? According to the study's authors, it's important to choose a prenatal supplement that provides sufficient levels of all six key nutrients. Relying on individual supplements for each nutrient may not provide enough of the other important nutrients. In addition, healthcare providers should be aware of the nutrient levels in different prenatal supplements and recommend specific supplements based on their patients' individual needs.
If you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant, talk to your healthcare provider about which prenatal supplement is right for you. Look for supplements that provide adequate levels of all six key nutrients, and remember that a balanced diet is still the best way to ensure you and your baby are getting the nutrients you need.

Too Much Ambient Noise? Here's How It Affects Your Nervous System
In my course, Your Healthspan Journey, one topic I speak about that you may not have heard of is the power of too much ambient noise to cause nervous system dysregulation. When our body is stressed it causes our blood vessels to constrict and heart rate to rise. Over time this can lead to stiffening of the arteries.
The article "Road Traffic Noise and Incidence of Primary Hypertension: A Prospective Analysis in UK Biobank" presents the findings of a study on the relationship between road traffic noise and the incidence of primary hypertension (high blood pressure). The study analyzed data from the UK Biobank, a large cohort study of over 400,000 individuals aged 40-69 years. The study found that exposure to road traffic noise was associated with an increased risk of developing primary hypertension, particularly among those living in areas with high traffic noise levels.
The authors suggest that efforts to reduce traffic noise levels could potentially reduce the incidence of primary hypertension and its associated health risks. Although the study is limited by its reliance on self-reported data for some variables and the lack of information on other potential confounding factors, one thing you can do to find out if you have too much ambient noise.
According to the European Environment Agency, “Estimates from available data suggest that 65% of Europeans living in major urban areas are exposed to high noise levels exceeding Lden 60 dBA (which could be due to attendance at social activities, such as bars and concerts), and that more than 20% are exposed to night-time noise levels exceeding 55 dBA, (the level at which there is an increased risk of adverse health effects occurring, according to the WHO).”
If you download a decibel measurement app you can see how loud your home or work environment is and figure out whether changing your environment might be better for your health. I moved away from a loud part of San Francisco and live in complete peace and quiet in Austin and it has improved my nervous system tremendously.
